A debit card comes with your bank account. It works like a check (and is sometimes called a check card) in that the money is removed from your bank account. If you have no money in the account, then the debit card won't work (unless you have overdraft protection).
A credit card is linked to a credit account. You use the card to pay for stuff and it gets added to your balance. That balance accrues interest and you have to make minimum monthly payments to pay off the debt. It's essentially a loan. These accounts have a maximum amount of debt and the card will be declined once you hit that maximum.
I hope that helps!
