So last week I went into a credit union to apply for a small loan. Everything went great until the agent couldn't verify my SSN I have had this problem before and never knew why but I carry my SSN for that reason so I showed the agent. She sent a few e-mails and whoever she was talking to told her that my SSN was coming up as a minors through experian. I have been through so many phone numbers and help sites trying to figure out how to fix this. But experian will NOT talk to me unless I get a credit report...I am unable to get a free one or even buy one because they think I'm a minor. I will be 20 years old this month. I don't understand this problem or how to go about fixing it. Should I speak to a lawyer?

Since you were denied credit, you are eligible for a free credit report from Experian. You don't have to go to annualcreditreport.com, and you don't need a lawyer.

Once you get the report, check to see if they have your correct social security number.

If they don't, it could be a clerical error on their part that is easily correctable. In the meantime, contact the Social Security Administration to obtain your correct Social Security number. It should correspond with your correct date of birth.

Call experian. Ask to talk to either a customer resolution

specialist or a manager instead of an ordinary customer service representative.

Explain your problem to the customer resolution specialist or manager.

Most likely, some idiot clerk entered your birth date wrong.

A customer resolution specialist or manager will be able to go in to the data base and resolve the problem. You may have to mail experian a copy of your birth certificate to prove when you were actually born.

If both a customer resolution specialist and a manager refuse to discuss the matter with you because their files are telling them you are a minor and they refuse to believe an error might have been made this is when you get a lawyer that specializes in credit problems.

The lawyer can represent you to experian and find ways of resolving your credit issues.

Legal representation should always be the last resort to solving a problem.

When dealing with a company try the following first to resolve your problem:

1.Customer Service Representative- These people are paid to solve

the small problems people have and make sure they don't blow up

into bigger problems.

2. Customer Resolution Specialist- The customer service representative has failed to resolve the issue. The Customer Resolution

Specialist has broader powers to resolve issues before they cost the company major money.

3.The manager. Or if a manager is unavailable ask for a supervisor.

This is the last attempt to resolve the matter in a friendly way. Problems that make it this far effect the company's bottom line.

Also if a problem makes it to this level someone stands a good chance

of being fired.

4.The lawyer. The company has not been able to or refuses to resolve

the issue. It is time to hire the appropriate type of lawyer and let the

lawyer use all the means that the law allows to resolve the issue.

Remember , this is a last ditch attempt at resolving the issue.

Also differant types of lawyers do different things.

Credit / financial lawyers are great for dealing with the laws involving our credit and financial systems but would be terrible if you needed a lawyer for breaking someone's arm in a bar fight.

Photocopy your birth certificate and driver's license. Enclose in a a letter and send via Certified Mail + Return Receipt to Experian. Simply state:

Per the Fair Credit Reporting Act, I am requesting validation that my correct date of birth is being reported by your firm.

you can go to annualcreditreport.com, which is the totally free website that was set up by the govt. You can get your experian report there. After you verify your dob, you can e-mail them and see what they need for documentation to get it changed.

If they won't talk to you because the claim your a minor, try having you mother and father call on your behalf because if you really were a minor they would have to talk to them, so given the system says you are one, they should talk to them.
